Check for Finance Owing on a Used Car
A vehicle finance check searches the PPSR for a security interest registered against the VIN. A recorded interest can mean a lender has rights in the car, even if you pay the seller. Search close to purchase and resolve any entry before handing over money.
What finance owing actually means
A vehicle finance check looks for a security interest registered against a vehicle. A PPSR certificate shows the registered interest, not the current loan balance. Ask the seller and lender for evidence that any interest will be discharged.
Why it is a critical check
The PPSR warns that a vehicle with an existing security interest may be repossessed after sale. This is most relevant when buying privately. Do not rely only on a seller’s verbal assurance; search the VIN yourself.

How PPSR records finance
The PPSR records registered security interests. It does not show whether an unregistered private debt exists or the amount owed. Buyer protection depends on timing and legal circumstances; consult the PPSR guidance for your purchase.
How to check for finance owing
Get the VIN or chassis number from the vehicle, search the official PPSR on the day or day before purchase, and inspect the certificate’s security-interest section. A plate alone cannot be searched on the PPSR.
| What it shows | What it means for you |
|---|---|
| VIN or chassis number | Match it on the car and papers before searching. |
| Security-interest section | Read each registration and secured-party detail. |
| Search certificate | Keep the time-stamped certificate with purchase records. |

What to do if finance is recorded
Pause payment. Ask the seller to arrange payout and discharge, and obtain written confirmation. If the entry remains, speak with the secured party or seek independent advice before buying. You can walk away if the risk is unresolved.
